A tale of two quarterbacks

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Football

For your consideration, I present two NFL quarterbacks over a roughly equivalent period.

QB 1: 14 games 11 starts, 18 TDs, 12 INTs, 54.8 completion %, 2608 yds, 6.2 yds/att, 76.0 QB rating

QB 2: 13 games 13 starts, 13 TDs, 13 INTs, 54.6 completion %, 2206 yds, 5.6 yds/att, 69.1 QB rating

Thigpen doesn’t suck. Everyone is shocked.

110.9, 89.42.  Those are the quarterback ratings of Tyler Thigpen over the last two weeks against the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  There is really no remotely rational explanation of why a second year quarterback out of Coastal Carolina, taken in the seventh round of the NFL draft should put up numbers like that in consecutive weeks.  Especially when you consider that the Chiefs best running back is serving an NFL suspension and hasn’t played in three weeks, the other two runningbacks are a rookie and a second year player, neither of whom was taken higher than the third round, the offensive line is patchwork at best, the teams best reciever is a TE who’s already asked to be traded, and his quarterback coach is some dude named Dick Curl who used to be in charge of clock management for a team that was terrible at it.

Watching Thigpen achieve mediocrity in the NFL on a more than 10-seconds at a time basis is probably the most surprising thing I’ve seen in pro sports since the Royals announced they weren’t sending Tony Pena Jr. down because they were afraid someone would claim their .160 hitting shortstop off waivers.  The good Thigpen should probably show up again next week, in general, it takes defensive co-ordinators three games of film to fully scout and evaluate a quarterback and offense.  This was game two.  If Thigpen hits league average again next week, we should get a good read on if he’s really any good at all the week after.
