OK, so imagine you’re Dayton Moore, the GM of the Royals, and the 2009 season has just ended in a massive disappointment. The relievers you picked up over the offseason turned out to be horrible, the power hitters you acquired over the offseason turned out to be horrible, the centerfielder you acquired over the offseason got hurt and will now be leaving because you can’t justify his $8 million option. You also have two catchers, who both kind of suck, and retaining them both would cost you around another $8 million. So what do you do?

I haven’t written about the team since the season ended, so here’s a quickfire recap if for some reason the only thing you read on the entire internet is an occasionally updated non-specific focused blog.
Mark Teahan was traded to the White Sox for Chris Getz and Josh Fields
Noel Arguelles was signed for $7 million over five years
Jason Kendall was signed for $6 million over two years
Miguel Olivio, John Buck, Coco Crisp, Josh Anderson, John Bale, Jamey Wright, Yasuhiko Yabuta, and Mike Jacobs were all cut, released, non-tendered and otherwise told to go work somewhere else

Mike Jacobs. I’m not going to waste your time with a big buildup on what GMDM’s biggest miss of the past offseason was, it’s Mike Jacobs. Jacobs himself has actually played about the way we would expect him to. He has a bad platoon split, hits bad pitches a long way, strikes out a lot, doesn’t walk much, and is absolutely unplayable in the field. Anywhere.

Really Dayton? I mean REALLY? THIS IS YOUR PLAN? Rany and Rob have both written about this disaster already, but it’s just such a bad, horrible, awful decision that it really deserves to be pilloried again and again and again. I mean, Willie Bloomquist? For two (2) years? For 1.5 million? Why? Why do you hate your fans GMDM?
