I don’t think anything portrays the modern Christmas spirit more than today’s video.  Material Girl, by Madonna.

Merry Christmas

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Football

Merry Christmans or whatever your holiday is if it isn’t Christmas, then happy that.  In other news, Notre Dame destroyed my bowl pool standing last night.  Charlie Weis is officially so awful he can’t even suck consistently.

Waste, fraud and abuse are endemic to everything

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Politics

Michael Sherer of Time put this post up on the Swampland blog yesterday, and it contained the following quote: “Republicans also have the ability to recast themselves as reformers, as the loyal opposition to the waste, fraud and abuse that is endemic to government,”.  This really jumped out at me because it’s such a distillation of the conservative, small government ideology.

The end of the human race

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Politics, Tech

The title isn’t an exaggeration or hyperbole like this type of title usually is.  One day the human race as we know it will end.  This will either happen in a bad way (extinction) or in a good way (evolution).  This post is about the second option.

Chiefs lose second coldest game ever

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Football

Well, there really isn’t much new to say about the latest loss.  KC jumped to early lead, led at halftime, and the offense disintegrated in the second half.  The defense continued its season long lack of ability.  The Chiefs may have the worst front seven in football right now.  The coaching staff continued to look baffled, abandoning the run early in 10 degree weather that included high winds.  This move made especial sense because the team had a lead and was averaging something like 8 yards a carry, and Thigpen’s deep throws were off target all day.

Friday Music Video

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Uncategorized

This has been a weird week.  The auto bailout didn’t pass, then Chrysler looked like it was about to fail, then Bush gave the industry money after saying for over a month that he wouldn’t.  And the Minnesota recount just refuses to end.  Plus one of Wall Streets most respected investors was running a $50 billion Ponzi scheme.   So today’s offering is We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel.

Chrysler shutters U.S. plants

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Business

Chrysler announced that it would shutter all U.S. plants by Friday, December 19.  These plants are to remain closed until at least January 19.  This is being done to reduce inventory and costs.

Right now Chrysler has too many cars to sell and not enough demand to sell them.  Temporarily shutting down the plants saves on production costs, parts, and raw materials.  It doesn’t save on labor costs outside of overtime because the workers are still being paid.

It’s a good move for the carmaker to make as it tries to stave off bankruptcy until the Obama administration comes in and presumably provides stopgap financing to it.  If the incoming administration doesn’t immediately provide bridge loans or TARP funds to the automaker, I would expect Chrysler to shut down within a few weeks afterwards at most.  If Chrysler goes out of business into chapter 7, around 1 million+ people could be immediately put out of work.  This is what is generally referred to as bad times.  More to come on this topic later.

Cool thing from the Internet

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Politics

This will be a new semi-regular feature.  Whenever I see something totally awesome on the Internet that has no apparent connection to anything, I’ll post it here.  Sometimes.

Tanks and the Crecy principle

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Military

This post could have just as easily been called “Do we still need Tanks?” or “Are Tanks still relevant?”  It’s a pretty radical concept, I know.  But if you look at the evolution of tanks, including why they were created in the first place, it starts to make a bit more sense.

Peterson Resigns, Fans Rejoice

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey    in Football

It finally happened.  King Carl is gone.  Long live.. whoever replaces him.  It came about five years too late, but Carl Peterson has finally been dethroned from his perch atop the Kansas City Chiefs.

In retrospect, everything went wrong when Marty left town.  You often hear about how a particular coach needs a strong GM to balance him.  Well, Carl needed a coach who was just as strong as he was to keep him in check.  Vermeil wasn’t the guy who was going to tell Carl that the team was getting old, he just wanted another super bowl before he retired.  You don’t win super bowls this year by starting a youth movement on a roster filled with pro-bowlers.  Edwards wasn’t going to challenge Carl either.  Half of Herm’s time coaching in KC has been spent covering up Peterson’s mistakes.

Ol King Carl did a lot to create the Chiefs renaissance in the 1990’s.  But it’s past time for him to move on.  It should be interesting to see who Clark Hunt brings in as his first GM.  I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Hunt on announcing the seperation of Peterson’s many titles into multiple fiefs, each with their own head honcho.  Peterson ran the entire organization so singlehandedly that the room for debate was limited and an echo chamber resulted with the same ideas getting amplified over and over again.  The offseason has begun already for KC, and it should be interesting.
