How to stop the pirates and save Somalia

The Somali pirates continue to make all sorts of news.  The latest being that the ” pirate mothership” sunk by the Indian Navy a few days ago may actually have been a transport ship that was in the process of being hijacked by pirates.  The inability of NATO and the local navies to put a stop to pirate attacks in a quick and immediate manner has led to all sorts of nonsense being speculated and bandied about on the news.  Some highlights, and an actual solution.

Why torture doesn’t work

Andrew Sullivan has a post up today linking to a discussion of torture with the producer of the Fox TV show “24″.  One of the things mentioned by the producer is that he doesn’t know if torture works or not.  This is the biggest failure of the media in regards to the torture debate.  Most people have no idea how torture works as an information gathering device and what its limits and advantages are.  When Jack Bauer tortures some guy and gets the info, it happens because the script says it should for dramatic effect, not because that’s how things actually work.  After the jump is a real example of what would happen if you needed information from someone and tried to use torture to obtain it.
