Yesterday the New York Times had a big story up about the effort by Washington D.C.’s school commissioner, Michelle Rhee and her efforts to end teacher tenure. This story also discussed the strong, strong opposition of teachers’ unions to the move. Last night I was talking to a friend that recently been laid off by GM. Previously he’d worked at Ford. He said at his old Ford plant, which just closed down, the workers had spent the last day essentially rioting, destroying cars on the line and in one case taking a shot at a supervisor.
