The awesomsauce of the Navy’s continuing insistence on its relevance as something other than a protector of shipping lanes continues. This article up on Time.com by Mark Thompson does a nice job of detailing just what a total clusterfuck the procurement and deployment of the new amphibious assault ships has been. Money quote: “We’ve been building these kinds of ships since 1943,”… “It has no big missiles, no advanced radar, and no nuclear propulsion.”
Of course, describing just how badly the ship works and how much its price went up in cost overruns ignores the more serious problem. Why the hell are we ordering new amphibious assault ships anyway?
