Back in the 1970s and 80s there was a big push worldwide to experiment with new processes and substances that allowed for the possibility of caseless ammunition. Caseless ammunition is particularly valuable in aircraft, where it allows for more firepower (caseless ammunition is lighter and smaller, allowing more of it to be carried) and more range (there are no spent brass casings to drag around in an ammo bin, less weight = more flying).
