TV football announcers are terrible. They blather, they mix up names, they often mis-diagnose plays, and sometimes commit even worse sins. Like getting bored with the game and talking over plays or getting carried away with highlights/replays and not even broadcasting the play on the field as it happens.
But mostly they just say stupid things. During the KU - K-State game today, after halftime K-State was down 31-0. On their opening drive they went for it on fourth and eight from their own 28. Didn’t make it. The announcers ripped them. Said it was a terrible mistake. Said it was way too early to do that. No, no it wasn’t. If anything K-State should have started doing that when they were down 21-0. I mean honestly, is there a practical difference between 31-0 and 38-0? If you’ve been failing so badly at conventional football for thirty minues that you’re down 31-0 at halftime, is something worse going to happen if you go for it every fourth down?
When you’re getting whupped you don’t stick with the safe play, you take risks because the benefits are desperately needed and the downside isn’t any more negative than what you’re experiencing already. NEVER PUNT WHEN DOWN 31-0. EVER. Also, good win by KU. Rock Chalk and whatnot.
