Clark Hunt: Follow the Money

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Business, Football, Politics

I was originally going to write this post last year, but I decided to hold off until NFL free agency started, just to give the Chiefs a chance to prove me wrong.  So far, they have failed.  I also considered titling this post “Look out Silver Market, Clark Hunt is stockpiling Cash!”  All numbers were sourced from major news publications via Google searches.

Cool thing from the Internet 10

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Politics, Uncategorized

This video appeared today and has pretty much spread everywhere already, but its worth reposting some more.  Pretty much perfectly sums up my attitude towards the democratic leadership and what I want them to do.  We gave those losers two straight sweep elections.  Man UP already.

Today’s sign of hope

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Uncategorized

To balance out the incredibly bad news in the previous post, here’s MLK Jr. auto-tuned and singing.  It’s worth listening to the words he’s speaking and remembering as screwed as we think we are today, we were generally more convinced we were screwed 50 years ago.

Today’s Sign of the Apocolypse

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Business, Politics

The supreme court today handed down a decision in a case on federal election spending by corporations.  Basically, the new ruling, which reverses about 100 years or so of precedent, grants corporations free speech rights in regards to federal election campaigns.  Given that (according to CNN) 22 or so states have similar laws on the books regarding state level campaigns, we can also expect this reversal to apply to state legislatures by the 2010 elections.  The ruling also applies to unions and trade groups in addition to corporations.

Understanding Dayton Moore

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Royals

Want to understand Dayton Moore? Try this:

OK, so imagine you’re Dayton Moore, the GM of the Royals, and the 2009 season has just ended in a massive disappointment. The relievers you picked up over the offseason turned out to be horrible, the power hitters you acquired over the offseason turned out to be horrible, the centerfielder you acquired over the offseason got hurt and will now be leaving because you can’t justify his $8 million option. You also have two catchers, who both kind of suck, and retaining them both would cost you around another $8 million. So what do you do?

Measuring the Chiefs 2009 season

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Football

So the season ended with a surprising victory over the Denver Broncos that featured a pair of historically significant performances. A lot of the coverage of the team seems to have focused on this 44-24 win and the solid performances turned in by several young players during the game.

Iranians still fighting for freedom

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Politics

Today is the holy day of Ashura in Islam.  It commemorates the martyrdom of Mohammed’s grandson Hussein and is particularly important to Shia muslims.  This year it also coincides with the seventh day of mourning for Ayatollah Montazeri.  Montazeri was scheduled to succed the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeni until he harshly criticized the regime for executing political prisoners in 1986.  Among other things Montazeri has done is to apologize to the U.S. for taking over the embassy in 1979 and issue several fatwahs against violence and suicide bombings.  From everything I’ve read about the man I think I would have liked to meet him.

Blackout Game

Posted by: Sean DeCoursey   in Football

So the Chiefs game was blacked out in KC for the first time in 19 years.  Among other things, this led to the presence of two geniuses at the bar who thought the game would be on there by virtue of “the Cleveland feed”.  This also led to the asked and answered question series “So is there anywhere in KC showing the game?”  ”Arrowhead.  I hear they’re showing it out there today.”  And that’s about the best thing I can say about the game.
